LMC has an extension in Brentwood. The name, meaning "the dunes" in Spanish, refers to the sand dunes that characterize its location in eastern Contra Costa County. The college, opened in 1974, is one of three publicly supported two-year community colleges in the Contra Costa Community College District (along with Contra Costa College and Diablo Valley College).
