The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is one of ten branches of the University of Hawaiʻi system anchored by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo is a public, co-educational university located in Hilo, Hawaiʻi in the United States. It was founded as Hawaiʻi Vocational College (Hawaiʻi College) in 1941. In 1970 it was reorganized into its present unit by an act of the Hawaiʻi State Legislature. Until the early 1990s UH Hilo and Hawaiʻi Community College operated almost as a single unit with students able to cross register at either campus. The campuses are located across the street from each other.
