It is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges as well as of the University System of New Hampshire along with the University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, and the Granite State College. Founded in 1909 as a teacher's college (originally, Keene Normal School; later, Keene Teachers College), Keene State College has grown to 6,400 students and comprises roughly 1/4 of the total population of the city of Keene, New Hampshire.
