College Profile: University of Oklahoma Norman Campus
The University of Oklahoma is truly an extraordinary institution, known for its academic excellence and strong sense of community. Attracting top students from across the nation and more than 100 countries around the world, OU provides a major university experience in a private college atmosphere.OU has emerged as a pacesetter for public higher education in the United States and is ranked by The Princeton Review among the top 10 public universities in the nation in terms of academic excellence and cost for students. Just one year after launching a five-year Campaign for Scholarship endowments, we reached our goal of raising $50 million, allowing the university to award hundreds of new scholarships and ensuring that OU will remain affordable and keep open the door of opportunity for all qualified students.
OU students not only benefit from a diverse and vibrant campus environment, they also enjoy living in Norman, which is Oklahoma’s third largest city. The Norman community offers excellent restaurants, great shopping next to the university on Campus Corner and plenty of smiling faces. An award-winning public school system and a thriving manufacturing and business community with clean, green neighborhoods keep many Sooners here after graduation. In fact, MONEY magazine recently named Norman, OK the 6th best place to live in America on its "Best Places to live 2008” list!

What US university should I study at for my year abroad?
I am currently studying BA Politics at the University of Sheffield. Next academic year I get to study a year abroad in the US! It's been my dream since a kid to live in the States due to the exposure to the American media. I was a big fan of the Simpsons when I was a kid so that has kind of shaped my idea of "America", bear this in mind... The universities I can study at are:
Case Western Reserve University
Drexel University, Philadelphia
George Institute of Technology
Montana State University-Bozeman
Oregon University System - All 7 campuses
University at Buffalo (SUNY)
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
University of Maryland at College Park
University of Michigan - College of Engineering (Engineering only)
University of New Mexico at Albuquerque
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
University of Oklahoma-Norman
University of Pittsburgh
University of Texas at Austin
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
University of Wisconsin Madison (Engineering only)
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
I want something that:
- has that Simpsons feel...
- is traditional America
- isn't too hot or too cold
- preferably snow
- near a major sports team
I'd like a university that meets the majority of this criteria.
Thanks!
The following are top tier unis in terms of reputation (considered among the very best in US)
UNC Chapel Hill, U Michigan, U Texas, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech
The others on the list are all excellent and well respected too - it's a very good list. I'll confine myself to talking about these five best ones though:
Virginia and especially Georgia tech are probably in the top five in the world in terms of absolutely amazing engineering and science programs - in the same league as MIT and Cal Tech really. You can expect really intense work ethics and lots of nerdery, especially at Georgia. VT is in quite a small town in the middle of some beautiful landscapes, while GT is in the centre of the huge urban mess that is Atlanta, where there's a lot more to do but less peace and student-centricism.
Chapel Hill, Michigan and Texas are all big old state universities that are considered some of the best of their kind - Michigan especially is a famously outstanding public school. All three are in fairly small college towns, especially UNC - Chapel Hill is a really lovely, quirky and happy place full of friendly and contented students, constantly getting involved in the awesome campus life. All three will give you great classic American college experiences. Texas is based in Austin, which is the only place in the whole state which isn't typically Texan - it's actually fairly liberal and progressive and there's lots of fun stuff to do there, including a great music scene.
None of these places will give you a "Simpsons" feel, mainly because you'll be living in huge universities with loads of students, rather than in a house with a small family. But they will all feel very American. VERY American - so don't worry about that. Especially the state schools.
Also it will be too hot AND too cold at all of these places. The only part of America that doesn't get extreme weather is the North West coast - so Oregon is the only place on your list that will get the weather you want. EVERYWHERE else will be boiling in the summer and freezing in the winter, so I advise you to just accept that and try and look forward to the challenge - it's part of the American experience after all! Having said that, UNC actually gets reasonably good weather and is very leafy/shady, which helps in summer.
You'll get snow pretty much everywhere as well, but more guaranteed the further north or east you go.
Regarding sports teams - what you'll find is that actually you'll get sucked into college sports rather than professional. Every university has their big teams and going out to support them them on game day is a huge deal for the students - I think you'll find it loads of fun as well! So you can't go too wrong there whatever you choose - although out of the five I mentioned, UNC is probably the most intense in its support for its teams (but only just).
There's more info on some of these unis and on US unis in general from a British perspective at http://www.uniintheusa.com
Good luck, have fun!

Can Freshman Okahoma University students live in Apartments?
I will most likely be attending The University of Oklahoma at Norman next year and I was wondering if they allowed freshman to stay in apartments. I know most colleges require freshmen to be in on campus housing, are there any campus apartments? Also I am currently concurrently enrolled in high school and a local accredited college. By the time i graduate high school I will have 12 hours. Am I still considered a freshman in college?
You will still be considered a freshman with only 12 semester hours. You will also probably be required to live in a dorm. Universities can make exceptions if you have family near campus or medical reasons, etc. Living in the dorm is a good thing though. I loved living in the dorm because it was a great way to meet people. There were always people nearby that I could study with or get study help from. The dorm also had lots of social activities in large areas downstairs. The food was great too. I saved a lot of money by eating at the dorms dining center. You will probably love the dorm once you get there!

Is the University of Oklahoma a Good school for Academics?
I just wanted to know because i hear about how good the sports programs are, but i never hear about them in academics. Just wanted to know because i might enroll there in the fall.
Yes, it is good for academics. It is one of the best schools in Oklahoma (tied with Tulsa in my opinion), but within the region I would say that there are better schools for academics. However, there are many positive things to say about the University of Oklahoma. The campus is great. The architecture of many of their buildings is phenomenal. The town of Norman is fully behind the school. They have many National Merit Scholars. They are spending a bunch of money on renovations to make the campus even nicer. Their football stadium is impressive to say the least. I know many OU grads that are now doing very well within their respective fields, so I would say that the University of Oklahoma has many great opportunities for a student who is concerned with either academics, sports, or both. What are you thinking of majoring in?
Is there anything wrong with Colorado School of Mines?
I am looking into colleges and am really leaning towards Colorado School of Mines. I have visited the campus and love it it, but I know tours and brochures don't say everything. Is there anything wrong or negative about the school because as of now it appears to be perfect. I would love to have some insider info, thanks so much.
It's one of the five best geology schools in the USA. There's nothing wrong with it if geology is your thing. The only thing wrong with is is the blizzards and the altitude, but that's personal for me. I grew up in New Orleans, so even though snow is beautiful. Anything more than 2 or three inches is on the ground is something I prefer not to have to deal with. I'm also scared about getting lost in blizzard, going ito insulin shock because of the cold. and my body not being found until the snow drifts melt, but that's my problem and psychological hangup. I would love to Colorado State university in Boulder to get a Ph.D, in planetary geology. but I don't have the money to move right now, and I still have to deal with my fear of blizzards. Ice storms ic an manage. It's Three DAYS of constant snow that i can't deal with, yet. I was hospitalized in a nursing home in NE OK when central Oklahoma had blizzards in February 2010. I was VERY gald I was NOT in Norman, The next year I lucked out, because i was home in New Orleans when it snowed in a lot in central OK. , This is not the first and probably will not be the last tiim that I will luck out by being home in New Orleans and not home in Oklahoma when Oklahoma gets a blizzard. . and 9 and a half inces of snow on the gournd for three days. I wrote half of my master's thesis in long hand in those three days. Then I finally went outside and measured how much snow there was on the ground. At least the University of Oklahoma cancels classes sensibily. Not like Tulane not canceling classes until AFTER the eye of the hurricane goes over the uptown Tulane campus. That really DID happen, September, 1971.
Check out the degree requirements online before you make a decision. Talk to or email first contact people on the Colorado School of Mines too. Making first contact with prospective studens is part of their JOB. They are PAID to answer prospective students questions.

Where is a good place to get a Masters in Library Science in the United States?
I'm currently working on my undergraduate degree. I know that there are plenty of links available online. I am looking for suggestions based upon personal experience. I know that there are plenty of Librarians on Y!A, right? Where did you get your MLS or where do you plan to? I appreciate detailed descriptions, thank you.
I got mine at the University of Oklahoma (OU). I went to both the Norman and Tulsa campuses. The program is okay; it's not the most prestigious school, but it's not the worst. Some of the professors were very hard to deal with, and depending on who your advisor is, you may have a hard time getting any actual "advice" from them. I also felt like the program was too grounded in theory; the library science theory is essential to know, of course, but there was very little in the way of practical courses/experience.
