The University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison, Madison, or Wisconsin) is a public research university located in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. Founded in 1848, UW-Madison is the flagship school of the University of Wisconsin System. It became a land-grant institution in 1866. The 933-acre (3.78 km2) main campus includes four National Historic Landmarks. Madison is organized into 20 schools which enrolled 28,999 undergraduate, 8,860 graduate, and 2,563 professional students and granted 6,265 bachelor's and 3,144 graduate and professional degrees in 2007. The university employs 2,054 faculty members. Its comprehensive academic program offers 134 undergraduate majors, along with 153 masters degree programs and 114 doctoral programs.
