Colleges in the State of Virginia

im stuck between james madison, george mason and virginia tech. I would love to get into UVA but I heard that it's really hard. I have around a 4.0 GPA involved with some clubs and the journalism area with some community service. idk which college to go to. I like james madison but im not really a party person and i heard its a big party school, and im korean, and do they hate koreans at virginia tech because of the shooting?? thanks/
yes but JMU, VT, and GMU does have a higher acceptance rate, so i probably woud have more of a chance

If you would "love" UVa, why not apply? If you're a Virginia resident you should have a shot. You've got nothing to lose except the time/money for the app.

I live in virginia and am applying to only in-state universities. I don't have the grades or gpa to try to get into UVA or William and Mary. But I am applying to James Madison, Virginia Tech, and some other safety schools. I have a gpa of 3.52 and an SAT score of 1820 (630 critical reading and 580 math) i have taken a ton of APs, and have done some extracurricular sports. I am a senior by the way. What are my chances of getting accepted into James Madison and Virginia Tech? Any virginia residents please help me out.

Don't sell yourself short. Your SAT and GPA are only a little below the average for University of Virginia and William & Mary. It would be difficult for you to get into either of those schools if you were from another state. But as a Virginia resident, you have a legitimate shot at both of them.

Virginia Tech is likely -- and James Madison is probable.

There is no single webpage that does something like this. What you need to do is get 'Petersen's Guide to Colleges and Universities,' your guidance office should have a copy, and start looking up the schools.

Keep in mind, there are private and public universities, colleges, technical schools, junior colleges, military academies, community colleges, theology schools, all throughout Virginia.

im currently applying at a veterinary science course in high school and im trying to get an idea of colleges so im prepared when i graduate.i've recently looked into the courses at virginia tech. most people that have taken the class im applying to usually go to va tech. but i'd like more choices. your help is greatly appreciated.

I think Virginia Tech is the only school in the state that offers courses in veterinary science. There aren't many vet schools in the country, which is why it is so competitive getting into veterinary school.

Hey Stephanie, I think I can help you out with this. I actually went to college in Washington, DC, but I live in Virginia and am very familiar with the higher ed system there.

The thing with Virginia is it has a lot of very good colleges, so I'll try to break it down for you.

As far as wow factor, the University of Virginia is always going to be the best. UVA is one of the top 3 public universities in the U.S. and one of the best schools in general. As far as the top 3 state schools, UVA is up there with the University of Michigan and Cal-Berkeley.

I would say the best school for your money is William and Mary College in Williamsburg. It is also one of the better public schools in America and is the second best in Virginia. Plus, as an added bonus, most people think W&M is a private school because of the name. Doesn't hurt, thats for sure. Also, tuition rates for the quality of education you receive there are very reasonable.

Other good colleges include:

Virginia Tech is heavy on the technical aspects, but a good, solid education overall. Additionally, it has good name recognition with employers.

James Madison in Harrisonburg, ranked number 2 in regional universities in the South.

The University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg; its also a very competitve school, but is much smaller than the previously listed and gives you the small, private college feel, even though it is public.

For liberal arts colleges, Washington and Lee University is also a very competitive and well respected small college.

Also, I'm going to list University of Richmond, also a competitve liberal arts college with a really beatiful campus.

Lastly, I'll throw in George Mason University, up here in Northern VA, it's not the best school, but it is up-and-coming and is quite strong in certain programs.

Although it could be debated, the order that I listed the universities in is the order of how well they are respected, as on resumes. UVA and William and Mary are easily the best and will always help you career wise, but the other schools are good as well, in addition to a few more VA schools that I did not list. Remember, chose on the overall package, not just what the rankings say. Atleast you'll have plenty of time to do your research since you're a freshman. Good luck!

I am planning on Majoring in Music or something in the area of Music Composition so what colleges would be good for that in Virginia?

VCU has a good music school.

The College of William and Mary is an incredibly prestigious school (especially where I live, on the East Coast.) UVA is one of the best schools in the country.
George Mason isn't good but it isn't bad...it has an okay reputation. Same with Virginia Tech and James Madison.
Any other public college doesn't have a good reputation.

I just found out that my couselor has not tranferred my dual enrollment class credits to the colleges I have applied to. When is the deadline, and how do you do this? The colleges I applied to were William and Mary, George Mason, Christopher Newport University, and University of Virginia. Is it too late to submit the credits after the deadline for applications?

Most of the better schools in the state (and the best schools in Virginia are pretty pathetic by national standards) do not offer undergraduate journalism programs. Indeed journalism is not an an undergraduate major at most of the better universities in the United States, where graduate programs in journalism seek students with a good liberal arts background and are unlikely to admit students with undergraduate journalism degrees..
